cream cheese garlic buns

Cream Cheese Garlic Buns

These cream cheese garlic buns are a popular street food in Korea. Their version is slightly sweetened with honey and contains egg. However, I have adapted it to suit us Indians by omitting the sweetness and egg and adding spice (green chillies). The exterior is crunchy, while the interior is super duper soft, creamy and luxurious. It’s like eating a cream cheese garlic cloud.

My family loved the tang from cream cheese and the chilli kick, it really is our new favourite garlic bread.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup salted butter

  • 1/4 cup garlic butter (I used this) If you don’t have this, please use salted butter.

  • 4 tbsp finely chopped fresh garlic

  • 3 tbsp milk

  • 1 tsp dried parsley/oregano

  • 1/2 cup softened cream cheese

  • 4 tbsp fresh cream

  • 4-5 green chillies – chopped finely

  • 4 Burger Buns

  • Grated cheddar cheese for topping

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 170°C and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a small saucepan, melt together the salted butter and garlic butter. Once melted, add in the fresh garlic, milk and parsley. Stir well and set aside.
  • In a seperate bowl, whisk together the cream cheese and cream for a minute until light and soft. Fold in the chopped green chillies and set aside.
  • On a cutting board, slice the burger buns into a + and then an x, giving you eight pieces. Make sure to slice the bun and not cut through the entire bun – the bottom should be intact.
  • Fill the chilli cream cheese mixture into a piping bag and pipe into all the ridges between the cuts in the bun. Gently open the space and pipe the filling generously.
  • Once the bun is filled, spoon over the prepared garlic butter and smear onto the top and sides of the bun. I used around 4-5 spoons of butter but add more or less depending on how you like it. Make sure the butter seeps into all the ridges.
  • Top it off with some grated cheddar cheese before baking.
  • Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the cheese has completely melted. Enjoy your creamy cheesy garlicky buns!
